Under the New Towns Act 1946, Stevenage was designated the first 'New Town' in the UK. Following World War II, many people from central London moved into the redeveloped Stevenage.
As part of the development process, a pedestrianized town centre was created. This was the first purpose-built traffic-free shopping zone in Britain, and was officially opened in 1959 by the Queen.
